NGARUAWAHIA MEMORIAL.

UNVEILING OF CENOTAPH. [BY TEEEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT.] NGARUAWAHIA. Monday. The consummation of a long effort was reached at Ngaruawahia on Sunday when the handsome cenotaph in memory of fallen soldiers was unveiled. It is erected in a commanding position at " The Point," near the junction of the Waipa and Waikato rivers, and is visible from the railway and road. The ceremony took the form of a military funeral, the 4th Waikato Band f*-om Hamilton attending while the firing party was provided by the local territorials. There waa a very large muster of returned soldiers, practically every branch ot tne service being represented. The ceremony at the cenotaph was simple. Mr. R. F. Bollard, M.P., released the Union Jack which veiled the base, and the Rev..C. B. Seton, M.C-, offered the dedication prayer and paid an eloquent and moving tribute to his old comrades, who had mads the supreme sacrifice. The firing party fired the last salute and the " Last Post" was sounded. On behalf of the Memorial Committee, which has raised the necessary funds, Mr. A. Morris handed the monument over in trust to the Borough Council. A number of very beautiful wreaths were laid at the base of the monument by the Borough Council, the Returned Soldiers' Association, relatives of fallen men, and other residents of the district. The cenotaph is a beautiful and simple monolith in grey marble. Set in the base are brass tablets bearing the names of the men of the district who lost their lives. Mr. T. M. Wilford, Leader of the Liberal Party, was received by a crowded house in the Town Hall on Saturday. The Liberal candidate for Raglan, Mr. S. Lye, was also on the platform, the .Mayor presiding. Mr. . Wilford vigorously criticised the policy and actions of the Government, paying special attention to the position in regard to cement and soldiers' land settlement. The Xech was frequently punctuated by ap- . use, and at. its conclusion a motion 01 thanks and confidence in Mr. Wilford and his party was carried amid euthusism. It was noticeable that the Opposition leader brought his catalogue of the great Liberals right up to date, the list start, with Ballance and including not onlv .Ward but Mac Donald. .
