UNVEILING CEREMONY,, (Bt TH.»OBArjr.T-r>WN 'cOMUSSVOXTOEN?.] KATJKAPAKAPA, IVies*! «y. The unveiling of the Kaaknpakapa district war memorial monument was performed to-day by the Hon. Of. 6. Coaies, Minister for Public Works. There was a large attendance of local residents and visitors. Mr. F. Stewart presided, and prefaced his remarks by a sympathetic reference to' the late Mr. F. Dye, who had been chairman of the Memorial Committee. Captain Theet, chairman of the Waitemata County Council, also paid feeing tribute to his late colleague's sterling qualities.
Mr. Coates spoke in the same strain, eulogising the deceased as a worthy example of a settler and friend. Continuing, the Minister paid a high tribute to New Zealand's soldiers, giving instances from, his own experience where pluck and esprit de corps had surmounted great difficulties. He made sympathetic reference to the next-of-kin who mourned their fallen. He also spoke of what the Government bad dono for returned men, and also what it was willing to do. He said no "grafter" need despair. The State s'as behind him until better times carats. Ho promised, on behalf of the Government, every consideration to partially disabled men. Mr. Murray, for 30 years teacher of the Kaukapakapa school, told of the lessons to be learned from the ceremony, and urged all to ba worthy of the Empire. Suitable hymns were sung, and the "Dead March" was played on the organ, the "Last Post" being; sounded at. the conclusion" as the flag was dipped.
