LAWN TENNIS.

Our London correspondent writes:—The competition for the All-England lawn tennis championships opened .at Wimbledon this week. The "weather was eorfect and the attendance good on each day. The name of Mr. A. F. Wilding, of New Zealand and Cambridge University, has been prominent in connection with the various matches. For the first round of the doubles championship the result of the draw was: Mr. W. O. Crawley and Mr. A. F. Wilding, w.0.; M. R. Kinze and M. C. von Wcssely scratched. In the second round of the doubles Mr. G. W. Hillyard and Mr. C. H. L. Cazelet beat Mr. W. C. Crawley and Mr. A. F. Wilding, 6—3, 6—l, 6—l. In the first round of the singles championship Mr. Wilding beat Prebble "after starting weakly," according to one of the critics, but in the second round he was beaten by Mr. H. S. Mahony, 4—6, 6—4, 11—9, 61, and one who was present has remarked: " The Irishman was certainly not let off lightly by Wilding, the young Cantab., who gave up cricket for lawn tennis last year; and probably, if the younger man had had more experience and perhaps a trifle more accuracy, the verdic* would have gone against the ox-champion, who is not the player he was."
