On December 5 the election of members of tho House of Representatives was hold throughout the colony, under new conditions in the history of New Zealand, inasmuch as it «ii.- the first election conducted on the principle of the " one-man-one-vote" measure passed by the last Parliament. As • rill bo seen by tho returns, the Premier ami the other members of tho Government lure been re-elected, with the exception of Mr. Hislop.whohas been defeated at Oamaru. Considerable interest was taken in the result of the contest for the Mnnukuu seat, is one of the candidates was tho Speaker of the House of Representatives, Sir G. M. O'Korko, acknowledged to be one of tho !>e.-t Speakers in the Australasian colonies. General regret will be felt at the news of las defeat.. The contest in Auckland city attracted great attention, as the position had been greatly changed there by the unexpected retirement of Sir George Grey, ami tin" consequent difficulty of selecting suitable candidates. Two of the representatives of the Liberal cause were returned for that seat. Many labour candidates have been returned, particularly in the large centres. The principal defeat which the labour party have sustained has been at Port Chalmers, where -Mr. Millar, the secretary of the Maritime Council, was beaten by a largo majority by Mr. Jas. Mills, managing director of the Union S. S. Co. Beside Sir G. M. O'Rorke and Mr. Hislop, other well-known figures in previous Parliaments have disappeared, including Mr. Larnaoh, an ex-Cabinet Minister ; Mr. Vinrent Pyke, a very old member of the 11, use: Mr. J. 1). Lance ; Mr. A. J. McGregor, the well-known senior Government whip : Mr. Seymour, formerly Chairman of Committees: and 1). H. McArthur, one of the Government's strongest supporters. We append details of the Auckland elections : — AUCKLAND CITY. In Auckland City there were seven candidates, a- follows:—Messrs. T. Thompson, l. M. Shera, W. L. Roes, H. \V. Famuli, W. ,1. Napier. A. Porter, and IT. Wallis. Of those, Messrs. Shera. Rees, and Napier had been chosen to represent the Liberal cause and the labour party ; and it was therefore expected that they would receive s;reat support. Mr. Thompson, who represented Auckland City North in the last Parliament, was working independently. It was predicted that he would be well supported, whilst many were confident that Mr. Porter, who had appeared late in the tic-Id, would be amongst those elected. The result of the poll was that Mr. Shera (who « is chosen to represent the Liberal Cause on the. retirement of Sir George Grey) was returned with the highest number of vote the other elected candidates being Messrs. The final result of the Wnitotarn election is a majority for Hutchison of 22, who secured 953 against Bruco's93l. Hutchison had majorities in 11 places, and Bruce in 13. Wellington*, December 7. The Premier has received intimation that an attompt is to be made to upset the Palmers ton election, for which Mr. Wilson defeated Mr. Pirnni by 57 votes, bub on what ground is not stated. It is reported that a comparison of the rolls show that a large number of persons voted in more than one booth. The rolls will be checked next week by the returning officer, when, if the report bo correct, the votes will bo disallowed. December 9. The scrutiny of the voting papers for the city election while reducing the number of each candidate does not niter the position of any of them. Messrs. G. Fisher, J. Duthio, and T. K. McDonald have therefore been declared duly elected. Grky.moi'th, December 7. A careful scrutiny reduces Mr. Guinness' majority to 19. TiMARU, December 7. AtOatnararu McKenzie received 6 votes, Buekl.ind '23, and Bruce 8. This completes the returns, which now stand : —J. McKenzie, 718 ; Buckland, 357 ; Bruce, 337. December 9. The scrutiny for Dunodin City was completed this* afternoon, when it was found there was not a single case of dual voting. The official figures are:—Pinkerton, 3209 ; Fish, 2934 ; Hutchison, 2833 ; Allen, 2485 ; Lo.'iry, 1838: Smith, 1835; informal, 15. This gives '2S members who are believed to be supporters of tin; present administration, and 31 members who have .indicated themselves as being opposed to the Ministry. Eight, members «re "independent," and can scarcely be placed. There are seven "labour" members, and most of these are also reckoned as opposition.
