HEW YEAR HOLIDAYS.

The good people of Rawene resolved to en jo> themselves and to take advantage of the holiday nndl the beautiful weather whioh obtains here now. The whole population was determined an enjoyment. Messrs. Bryers, Menzies, Reisiter, and Beitely formed a committee of management, and resolved on a pionlo to Onoke, the beautiful residence of tho lute Judge Manning, now in oharge of Blr. Meers. The whole thing was well done, and gavo thorough satisfaction. The «.s. Pinko was chartered for the day, and Mr. Beasely kindly lent his large new punt, Smoothing Iron, as well as his fishing boat,, JB cm«i. A start was made from Rawene wharf at about nine a.m., when fully ICO embarked on board the Piako and on her tenders, Smoothing Iron and Bones and prooeeded down the river to Onoke, where they were met on landing by Mr. Meers, who cordially welcomed the whole pirty, and led them over the house and grounds. The little folks were highly delighted wiith the swings which he had erected for them under the fine lofty poplars, vv kilo tfao young ones were enjoying swing* ing, and the elders the scenery, Mr. Beaaely and a party went out in Bones and caat their net. The result was a haul of over 100 riplendid mullet. These were destined to form part of the great feature of the day, a monster ban (: i, I have seldom seen a larger koppa Mauri, and never a cleaner or better cooked one The various ingredients ol tho big ovim were cooked to a turn, and the favour would please even a London Alderman. 100 much praise cannot be given for tJie feast provided, nor will the good folks of tawtine forgut in a hurry the genial hoapitaiity of mine host, John Briars, and the indefatigable zeal and attention of Mrs. Briars and her charming assistants. Later in the day ii large party from Motukaraka joined the (gathering, and helped to swell the numbers. This contingent was most hospitably received. Soon after one p.m. word went round, that the hangi was ready for opening, when the excursionists and their visitors, 150 in number, sat down with sharpened ajaetites to enjoy the savoury dainties. The feast reminded me of the "loaves and fishes," more scraps being gathered up than would supply Another such gathering. Dinner over, all went in a most determined way to enjoy themselves. Various games were started, cricket football, French tigue for the ladies and their swains, swinging, e £°' „ Messrs. Menzies, Briers, Flood, and the Rev. Mr, Joohin were most indefatigable m promoting these. About eight p.m., after a hurried tea, a start for home was made. When all were embarked, the good ship Piako took her tenders in tow and headed for Ruwene, which she reached just as the moon rose. Everyone enjoyed the outing thoroughly.
