AUCKLAND BOWLING AND LAWN TENNIS CLUB.

A meeting of the Auckland Bowling and Lawn Tennis Club took place on Saturday evening, at the Waitemata Hotel. There were about forty gentle* men present (the Mayor of Christ* church, Mr. C. P. Hulbert, being one of the visitors), and the gathering was one of the most enthusiastic and successful that has yet been held, the object being the presentation of the trophies to the successful com* petitors of the past season. His Worship the Mayor (Mr. W. R. Waddel) presided, and in his introductory remarks said the duty that devolved upon him was a pleasing one, namely, of presenting the prizes. He was glad to say they had among them that evening the Mayor of Christchurch, Mr. Hulbert, an old Auckland resident, both as a visitor and a bowler, and in the latter capacity he was especially weloome. There was but one regret, missing the genial face of their late President, Mr. Thos, Macfiarlane—peace to his memory. During the next season they would want more green* room and additional lawn tennis courts ; but, judging from the large attendance and the interest shown, he felt sure the means to effect this would be readily forthcoming. He had great pleasure in making the presents* tions; and to the recipients of the caps he would say, might they always have the means to fill them and the energy to empty them. In a few humorous remarks the Chairman then made the presentations, each successful recipient being cheered as he obtained his prize. The following was the prize list: —

The prizewinners returned thanks in appropriate terms.—Mr. Mackeohnie relumed thanks for Mr. Ritso, at present in Sydney, and took charge of his prize. On bis own behalf as the winner of Mr. few icon's Cup, he desired to thank that It was a very handsome one. Kr. Lew isson was the only gentleman onts'.la the Club who had offered a prize, and he had done so for three years in succession, to encourage the game. Mr. Chadwi~k responded for bis daughter, iss Ada Ch'ilvvick, and also took occasion on his own IcValf to thank Mr. W. S. Jones for the h*niTaome leather case he presented for the champion bowls he had won. The prize clips having been duly christened with champagne, the toast of " The Successful Competitors" was duly honoured, and responded to. The toast of "The Donors of Prizes" was then gi*en, coupled with the names of Messrs. Lewisson, J. and D. Robs, G. lloldship, and W. S. Jones. It was heartily drunk and responded to. Mr. Bell suggested that Mr. Lewi«son be made will be carried out at a formal meeting, an honorary member, and the suggestion of the Club.—Mr. E. W. Page stated he would be leaving Auckland for a season, bob he would be happy to offer a pair of prize bowls for the coming season. Chairman then proposed the health of "The Mayor of Christohurch, Mr. Hulbert," as a visitor and a bowler. He hoped to Bee other Ohristchurch men among them, especially in the bowling season.—The toast was received and drunk with great cheering.—Mr. Hulbert, in acknowledging the compliment* thanked the committee for the courtesy they had shewn in inviting them to be present, and the meeting for the warmth with which the toast had been received. He was a resident of Auckland fourteen years ago, and had now come up on a visit. He was both pleased and proud at the strides Auckland had made in that time, and hope it would continue. He enjoyed bowling, and he would now give a hearty invitation to any of the Auckland bowlers, when they happened to be in Christchurch, to come and visit the Ohristchurch Bowling Green. Before sitting down he would do himself the honour of proposing the health of " The Mayor of Auckland, Mr. Waddel." The toast was enthusiastically drunk.—Mr. Waddel replied in appropriate terms.—Mr. Mackechnie proposed the health >f "The Secretary, Mr. W. Tait," who was both a good secretary and a good player. To his energy they were largely indebted for '.heir success, for he was not only the Tait hut the potentate of the club. (Laughter.) —Mr. Tait, in responding, referred to the steps taken to have an enlaarged bowling green for next season, and in good condition. There would be two lawn tennis courts ready also second to none in Auckland. A piece of ground was left which lie thought should be devoted to quoits for those who loved that game, and space also or a Fives Court." They would make he grounds the most popular resort in Auckland if the same enthusiasm as shown at that meeting was exhibited by the outside publio. The desire of the committee was to popularise, not to exclude. He hoped to see next season a large number of ladies at the lawn tennis grounds. It would be better for the ladies and better for themselves. (Laughter.) —Mr. Tait proposed "The Press," their indebtedness to which, he said, was felt by every member of the club.—Mr. G. M.
