QUARTERLY LICENSING MEETING. The quarterly meeting of the Auckland Licensing Lourt was held at noon y e3terday at the Police Court, It was presided over by Mr. R. C. Barstow, R.M., Chairman, and the following Comnissioners : Messrs. G. M. Mitford, F. L. Prime, and J. May. Mr. Superintendent Thomson ar>peared on behalf of the police. Transfers.—The following transfers were were granted Wyayard Arm 3 Hotel, Symonds-street, from Geo. T. Codlin to Geo. Hy. Eaaton; Waitemata Hotel, Queenstreet, frjm Chas. B. Elwards to Donald McGregor ; Masonic Hotel, Prince3-street, from Thomas Hood to John Grey; Wellington Hotel, Wellington-street, from Fredk. B. Hughes to Andrew- Robert Dunn ; Royal George Hotel, Newmarket, from John Jesse Od<um to Ciias. J. Ratgen ; Fitzroy Hotel, Waketield-street, from William Pritchari to' James Patterson ; Provincial Hotel, Prinzesstreet, from George Wightman to Herbert Wm. Cannon.

Railway Regl-latiov.-.—William Cuttle, of Parnell, was charged with a breach of the railway regulation, by trespassing on the Auckland and Ohiupo Railway, near Penrose junction, on the lGth instan:. He a Imitted th.3 oifeuce. The defendant, it appears, was rabbit-snooting. The stationmaster asked him to desist, as he thought it a dangerous practice, and defendant told him to mind hia own business. Robert SchoSeld, station-master at Penrose, deposed to the facts. The defendant said he had -hot at a rabbit which crossed the line, and he went after it; that wa3 all. The station-master said that a great deal of trouble was caused by people late at night and early in the morning, uncoupling the trucks and shifting the trucks to cross the line. Fined 40$, and 7a costs. CITY OF ALTCKLA.N*D ASSESSMENT COURT. [Before R. C. Biratow, Esq., R.M.] This Court held an adj>urned sitting yesterday, a: the Police Court, for the hearing of objection to the valuation of properties in t:ie South Ward of the city. It wa3 presided over by Mr. Barstow, R.M., a3 judge of the Court. Mr. P. A. Philips, TowiT "Clerk, represented the Corporation, and Mr. H. G. Wade wa3 present as valuer, and attested the valuation list in the usual form. The following appeals were dealt with :— SOUTH WARD. Benjamin Blakey.—Reduced from £35 to £30.

W. W. Boston.—Reduced from £70 to £00.

J. and G. Buchanan, rated at £30, objected that it was £10 over-valued. Reduced to £25 by consent. He objected to a Becond valuation for a piece of back ground (£10). He Eaid the rating ought to be included in the front property. He derived no benefit from it. It transpired that Mr. Buchanan had offered the property to the City Council for £140. .Reduced to £7 10s.

Thoma3 Buddie was assessed at £50 for property (for school) in Pitt-street. He claimed that thi property was not ratable. Mr. A. E. SYhitaker appeared for the objector, and said that the building was occupied as a church. His Worship : Solely as a church ? Mr. Whitaker: The Act did not require that. He called Mr. F. L. Prime, who deposed that he was one of the trustees. The building was used on Sundays for Sunday-schools, and on week day 3 for religious services. It was never let for meetings, and no revenue wa3 derived from it. His Worship said though the church was exempt, he could not see hi 3 way to exempt the school. Trie valuation wa3 sustained on the ground that the building was U3ed as a school.

William S. Cochrane.—Reduced from £2-5 to £IG. A second objection against a valuation of £33 was not 3U3tained, the appellant not appearing.

The name of \Villiitn Pettit was substituted for T. Cooper.

W. Downs.—Reduced from £35 to £25. Edward Drinkwater objected to two assessments (£4O and £20). The latter was reduced to £13, and the former to £35.

A. Eaglesim appealed ajainst his valuation (£55). It was a brick house in Wellesleystreet. The house would not let for more than £1 a week. It had about 55 feet frontage to Tuere were eight or nine room 3in the house. Mr. Wade gave evidence. Valuation sustained.

Henri' Elliot.—Reduced from £20 to £15 ; another, from £30 to £25 ; and a third (£24) to stand. A number of other properties for which Captain Elliott wa3 assessed were transferred to Daniel F. Evan3.

The name of Arthur Feanell was substituted for F. G. Ewington for a property assessed at £10.

William Foulner applied to have the name of Mrs. Margaret Cook substituted for his, for property assessed at £15. The Town Clerk objected to the alteration, and the name was ordered to stand. James Gardin;r. — Reduced from £40 to £35. K. D. Giles.—Reduced from £55 to £50. Susan Gimble objected to her assessment (£35) as excessive. She did not appear, and no reduction was made. Mr. Gorrie applied to have transfers of several properties sold by auction transferred to the purchasers. The application was granted.

Christopher Gresnway appealed against an assessment of £106 for property in Hob-son-street, aud claimed it was only value for £100. Mr. Greeuway, jun., appeared in support of the appeal.—Redaction agreed to.

The name of John Hamilton was substituted for James Bound.

F. Hewin applied to have the name of E. Hollo way substituted for his.—The application was agreed to, and a reduction in regard to another seciion was made from £G0 to £55.

Denis Markham, assessed at £115, appealed against hia valuation as excessive.— He did not appear, and the assessment wa3 sustained.

The nme of Frank Jagger was substituted for John Marshall for a property assessed at £5.

Agnes McKinnie.—Reduced from £30 to £20.

E. W. Morrison.—Reduced from £40 to £ 0.

Samuel McPherson.—Reduced from £34 to £27, and from £40 to £35.

Li H. Neu'iegen appealed against three assessments of £45, £40, and £50, for property ia Hobson-street. The second was reduced to £30, and the third was reduced to £45.

H. J. Parker.—Reduced from £60 to £55, Wm. Henry Potter, valued at £30, objected. Reduced to £26.

G. Rhodes.—Reduced from £55 to £50. Robed; Strong, assessed at £40, objected. Reduced to £.35.

Joseph Sparrow.—Reduced from £28 to £26.
