Ijheartsof most of the old residents in this Province.! jrlt would be difficult to meet with any person inf [the neighbourhood of Auckland more universally! esteemed, or whose loss—at the present juncture,! jwill be more severely felt than that of the latcg eColonel Marmaduke George Nixon. Colonel! |Nixon had in his earlier days seen much service! jin India, for which ha held several medals,® fand where he attained the rank of Major inj sH.M.’s. 39th Regiment, From the time when hel sbecame a settler in this province till the outbreaks ot the present war he had been living in retire-s ment from active service on his farm atMangarei.l The kindness and amiability of his endeared him to a large circle of friends, and hel had entered with much relish and considerables success into farming and pastoral pursuits. H From the first commencement of the present war [I ■he had placed his services at the disposal of the a .Governor, and had held various posts of higli3 [trust, in which he had always proved himself ana lable, energetic, and high-spirited officer. To hisl !men he was ever kind and considerate, at the J *same time that he permitted no breach of dis--■cipline. The duties for which he was always' .selected were those which gave him com-] jtnand of forces raised from the ranks of his] ifellow-colonists, but he enjoyed in a high degree 5 [the respect and esteem of the officers of the regu- ■ ■lar army. He was Colonel of the Auckland] sMilitia, and of the Royal Cavalry Volunteers. He fwas also Commandant of the Local Defence Force. |He received the wound which has, after a linger-; Hug illness, terminated in his death, in the 51st ’year of his age, at the attack at Rangiawhia, on fthe 21st February, 1864. | The following are the general orders issued I by Major-General Galloway yesterday, relative! to the funeral: — | Militia and Volunteer General Orders, | Auckland, May 27th, 18G4.1 No. 1. I It is with deep regret that the Major-General an-l enounces to the Colonial Forces the death of Colonel I IMarmaduke George Nixon, Commanding Colonial | Force and Royal Cavalry Volunteers, which 3 -took place this morning from a wound received in action 1 ton the 21st February last, at Rangiawhia. I By the death of Colonel Nixon the Colonial Forces | lose the services of a most gallant and chivalrous Officer,! and the Colony loses a noble gentleman, and an ener-5 getic settler. I The remains of Colonel Nixon will be interred on» Monday next, the 30th instant, at 3 o’clock p.m. I No. 2. j With reference to the above Order, a firing party,! consisting of all the available men of the Ist and 2nd] iClass Auckland Militia, Auckland Rifle Volunteers, and] I Auckland Naval Volunteers, under the command of] ILieut.-Colonel Nation, will assemble at 2 o’clock, p.m.,1 Son Monday next, at the Albert Barracks, without their; shall ammunition in their pouches, when they will be . ■supplied with blank cartridge. ? | No. 3. 5 9 Capt. Hutton, Commanding Royal Cavalry Volun-' Steers, will take steps to order the different troops of the ■above corps to parade at the same time and place. • I No. 4. I I Capt. Hardington, Commanding the Auckland iXroop Royal Cavalry Volunteers, will be pleased to ifurnish a guard over the remains of Colonel Nixon at |the Albert Barracks, from to-morrow, at 4 p.m., until ■the funeral takes place.
