The Government Engineer's report on on "the capacity of the water race was read at the Council meeting last night, but owing to the pressure on our space and the late hour at which the Council rose' we are unable to give it until Monday, Briefly the report staites that the race was designed to carry 30 heads of water, but owing to siltage the race is now only fqual to about 1? or 18 heads, It'would not be a difficult matter to- widen and clean out the race to enable it to carry •25 heads. A, difficulty is the fluming, which •without freeboard would carry 34 heads when put in order. The 'trusses and 'foundations would have to be mado more secure. To save thff large expense of piping the Engineer, recommends that a race be. constructed to a point overlooking the town, and thence pipe to the power house. Further detailed Work by an Engineer is recommended.

A rush was made'towards the door. He heard a shot fired, and immediately ran into the passage-way, at the same time telling the foremost of the workers to stand back. Wade said he rushed through .towards the folding-door, from whichhe saw Evans'fire, Being under the impression! that the shot'was fired direct -at him, Wade chased ■ Evans out through the back to the vacapt allotment. He was gaining fast on th«l fugitive when the latter swung right round and fired point-blank, the Wet striking Wade in the abdomen. ' The constable continued the chase, and drawing his baton 'before Evans could start off again, struck him on the head, Evans ialline flat on his face. Then the crowd took charge.
