At tho installation of Councillor VV. H. Cooper as Mayor of ChriHtchurch, the rotii'ing Mayor (Mr Gapos) sud tho p/wb year had boon noted for tho number of funds tli.it had boon established for tho relief of uucinpluyod and for oihor charitable purposes ; also, for tho relief of tho suflorers by tho Wairarapa disastor. These had at times overlapped on© another, but ho thought these funds had been on tho wliolo judiciously administered, and ho had tv thank the citizens for tho liberal in inner in which they h.td hubtjciibod to thorn. Mr Cooper fluid ho felt that tho unemployed quo-Hion, to which Mr Cnipes hid referred, waa a dilh'cult one, and would have to bo faced year aftor year. 110 would take tho opportunity of laying his views before tho tJouncil ut noxt mooting.
