MESSRS J. T. EVANS AND COMPANY'S FLOUR MILL.

Tho extraordinary productiveness of tho district of Oamarn has originated and fostorod many milling enterprises, in tho very front rank of which may be placed that under notice, not on account of what the mill will for tho present accomplish, but because of its immense capabilities, which need only to bo utilised to placo it foremost, not only among the mills of this district, but among; those of tho whole colony. Tho 6rm of J. T. Evans and Company has only been in existence about 2£ years, they being the successors in the Teaneraki Mill of Messrs J. K. Anderson and Company, the principal of the latter firm having relinquished business for the purpose of visiting the Mother Country. The present firm started with a full belief in tho pro eminence of Oamaru as a grain growing district, as compared with other districts of tho colony. In short, they regardod, and still regard it as the Adelaide of Now Zealand. Fully possessed with this idea, they came to the conclusion that tho milling trade was one which might be profitably extended. Thoy believed that the grain produce of the district ought not in its raw state to form an article of oxport—to any extent at least; and not contonfc with the mere expression of this conviction, they have endeavored to give it practical illustration. The Teaneraki Mill soon became too small for the exercise of their energies, no loss than for the requirements of their rapidly increasing trade, and then it was that they resolved on tho erection in Oamaru of a building of such dimensions as would provide ample accommodation for storage, as well as manufacturing purposes. It was decided that tho building ohould be of atone, and accordingly Mr James Johnston, architect, was engaged under the instructions of the firm to prepare the plans, &o. In Sept. 1877 — only twelve months ago — tenders wore invited for the erection of what is at tho present time the largest building in Oamaru The contract for the stone work was secured by Mr Barclay, while that for the carpenter's portion was let to Mr Sidon ; the whole of tho engineorinc work being entrusted to Messrs Jack, Steol, and Hendry. The latter firm also secured tho contract for the making and erecting of the gear, competing against several Dunedin and local firms. Tho whole of the work has been oarrlod out to tho entire satisfaction of the firm, and is indeed in its several departments most excellent — doing the highest credit to those extrusted with its execution. It is also satisfactory to learn that notwithstanding the gigantic proportions of the work — the necessity for lifting large masses of stone, sometimes by hand labor, not a single accident has* occurred. The building is constructed of Oamaru stono and American pino. Having already, in a previous issue, given a detailed account of this, wo do not deem it necessary now to give more than the dimensions, which are as follow : —Entire length, 120ft ; width, 54ft ; height of parapet, 40ft } height of fagado, 53ft ; height of ridge, 52ft. It is divided into four storeys, and is admirably lighted throughout. For any more minute particulars we would refer our readers to our previous report. The engine-houie is attached to the main building, and i« 59ft long, by 40ft wide, by 34ft high, is part stone and part of iron, and is of two storeys, on the upper of which is tho "Eureka" smutter. The engine is by Musgravo and Son, of Bolton, England, and is what is known as a compound tanden horizontal engine, fitted with Musgravo's patent valve gear, on a high pressure cylinder. It is of 25 h.p. nominal, but capable of working up to about 100 h.p, The flywheel is lift in diameter, by 10 inohei widt, and i« by tht ume maker.
