The official declaration of the poll for the election of Superintendent of this Province took place on Friday last, when the numbers were as follow : — For Mr Moorhouse ... ... ... 1604 „ Lanco 891 „ Trovers 186 The Returning officer declared Mr Moorhouse duly elected. The Council elections are now upon us, and we are still up to the eyes in politics. The Lyttelton election took place on Thursday, but the procedings were characterised by a more than usual want of excitement. I give the names of the candidates, and the numbers they polled : — Davis 148 E. A. Ilargreaves ... ... ... 136 Murray Aynsley ... ... ... 135 Buchanan 119 Bradwell 91 The first four were declared duly elected. The Chri8tchurch nomination took place on Friday, when there were seven candidates introduced to the notice of the electors, viz. : — Messrs Hawkcs, W. Wilson, W. Wynn Williams, F. G-. Garrick, Luck, S. P. Andrews, and E. J. Wakofield. At the close the show of hands was declared to be in favor of Messrs Garrick, Wynn Williams, Ha'wkes, and Andrews, whereupon, as usual, a poll was demanded on behalf of the other candidates. The poll was taken on Saturday, and our city was again the scene of bustle and excitement. I refrain from describing it, however, as such things are now so well understood that they can excite little interest in people at a distance, and even for a very brief moment on the spot itself. At four o'clock the numbers polled stood thus : — Garrick 50G Hawkes 484 Williams 440 Wilson 375 Luk 357 Andrews ... ... ... ... 335 Wakefield 39 The first four were elected. I must not omit mentioning that our new Superintendent was invited to a complimentary dinner on Friday evening, in the Town Hall, when about 150 persons were present. The chair was filled by Mr Ollivier, who after the usual loyal toasts proposed tho toast of tho evening, in a manner that elicited great applause. Mr Moorhouse responded in a fitting manner, saying, infer aha, that he had been astonished at the immense majority by which ho had beaten his whilom opponents, Messrs Lance and Trovers, and haying in this manner been assured that lie enjoyed tho confidence of tho country lie would endeavor so to act as not to forfeit it. By the way, on His Honor stepping into office that day, the members of the Executive resigned their seats, in order that they may be filled as to his Honor seemed desirable. In the evening, a Gazette notified tho appointment of Mr Tancred as President ; Mr Stewart, Secretary ; and Messrs Garrick and Cass, additional members, to form the number legally required. I am informed that these appointments are made subject to future modifications, as the Superintendent desires to wait the issue of the Council elections before constituting a full and permanent cabinet. As yet there is no Secretary for Public Works. From the West Coast the news to hand in Christchurch is not important. A new rush is reported at tho Waimea, to ground which had been worked some time previously. The prospectors obtained from one to two dwts. to tho dish, with a depth of dirt from one to two feet, and no stripping. It is believed that there will be several very good claims opened. At tho Teremakau some 300 or 400 diggers are now

located, and something like a township is springing up. Were it not for the river, -which affords facilities for the passage of canoes up and clown, the expense of getting provisions to theso diggings would he a sad barrier to success, or rather saving, but canoes are towed or poled ulong at a comparatively moderate rate. One party (Cameron's) arc pocketing L20 per man weekly. There is, so far ns I can ascertain, no intelligence of tho safety or otherwise of Mr George Dobson, the assistant district engineer, who was last seen on his way from tho Arnold township to Greymouth.
