ELECTION NEWS. Mongonfi and Bay of Islands. — The polling for this district gave Mr. M'Leod a majority of 64 votes over Mr. Carleton. The latter gentleman was tho first member elected iv New Zealand to sit in Parliament, and he has held a seat ever since. There are rumours that he owes his present defeat to Ministerial influence. Post Chalmehs. — Mr. Macandrew, after sustaining a defeat for the Clutha district, has beaten his opponent, Mr. Jago, by exactly two votes to one, for Port Chalmers, the numbers polled being, for Mac andrew, 196 ; Jago, 98. Rodney. — Mr. Farnall has been returned, defeating Mr. Shepherd, for the district of Rodney, an electoral district to the north of Auckland. Western Maoei District. — The election for this district took place on Monday last. There were three candidates— Mete Kingi, Major Kemp, and Wi Parata, a half-caste, and protege of Wi Tako. The result of the poll at Wellington, was as follows :—: — Wi Parata ...... 79 Mete Kingi 1 Major Kemp 0 The district is large, and there are so many polling places that it will be some time before all the returns are in. j Gladstone. — Mr. Parker has been returned as the successor of Mr. Jollie, by a small majority over his opponent, Mr. Turnbull.
