THE ST. LEGER AT DONCASTER.

The Doncaster September Meeting has settled the pretensions of many a great gun for some time to come at least. The meeting itself has been one of the most interesting and successful ever known in the " old spot," for the racing was peculiarly close, but the run on favourites on everything but the race has been extraordinary. The St. Leger race will not be forgotten for some time to come. When the competitors mustered in front of the stand, every eye was directed to Blink Bonny and Ignoramus, and there were but few to find a fault in them ; but Anton and Imperieuse came in for a great share of admiration, and it is greatly to be regretted that the former could not be got from the post, for he must have been in the race. Sir Colin looked " all to pieces," and Arsenal was friendless. The pace was moderately good, and the favourites looked very well till nearing the distance, where they appeared decidedly beaten, and it seems as if Commotion and Tournament were to finish the race ; but the latter had been racing with the favourites, and although he beat them, he had not an effort left in him ; for when Nat brought up Imperieuse, he could not compete with her, and she won with ridiculous ease. There was not so much shouting as we have heard, after such a surprise, and for a very good reason, for the layers generally are not very heavy winners, while the "public" could never be persuaded to stand her. The winnings, consequently, go into the pockets of those immediately connected with the stable, which is celebrated for winning when the public is not "on." The following are the particulars of the only event of importance connected with the present running at Doncaster :—: — The ST. LEGER STAKES of 25 soys. each, for three-year olds ; colts, Bst. 71b.; filies, Bst. 21b.; the owner of the second horse to receive 100 soys. out of the stakes : the winners to pay 100 eovs. towards the expenses ; 25 soys. for the Judge, and 25 soys, for tho starter ; St. Leger Course. The St. Leger Settling. — At the rooms next morning the business of the settling commenced, and was proceeded with as far as could be in reference to parties who were absent. A good deal of money changed hands. The bookmakers, generally, are the losers, and the settling is sure to be a good one. The Leviathan laid as much as 3615,000 against the mare, but is covered, through other horses, to within about Mr. Jackson is likewise a heavy loser. The Wizard of the North division, who had backed their fifteenth Whitewall trained Leger winner with much zest ever since York, are winners to a very large amount — one gentleman alone 56 10,000. Mr. Perry, an influential party on the stock exchange, has likewise thrown in for a good stake. Great dissatisfaction and uproar occurred at Doncaster, owing to Blink Bonny, who had lost the St. Leger on the day previous, winning the Park-hill Stakes, and carrying 101b. more thau she did in the St. Leger, and running the race in two seconds less time. The moment the mare came to the ring there was a disturbance, owing to the impression that the owner and the jockey had " fleeced the public." Amongst sporting men it appeared to be the general opinion that Blink Bonny had been pulled in in the St. Leger.
