REPRESENTATION OF THE MOTUEKA

AND MASSACRE BAY DISTRICTS

The election of a member for the seat vacant by the resignation of Mr. Parker took place at the school-house, Motueka, on Saturday last. It being understood, previous to the nomination, that Mr. White had retired from the contest, and that Mr. Curtis would be elected without opposition, there was a very small attendance of the electors.

The Returning Officer having gone through the usual forms, Mr. Jacka proposed Mr. Curtis as a fit and proper person to represent the district in the House of Representatives, and believed that he would well serve the interests of the constituency. Dr. Greenwood seconded the nomination of Mr. Curtis, and expressed his concurrence in the remarks of Mr. Jacka.

The Returning Officer having asked if any other elector had a candidate to propose, and no one replying, proceeded to declare Mr. Curtis duly elected. Mr. Curtis thanked the electors for the honour they did him in electing him to be their representative in the General Assembly, and said that he should proceed to Auckland by the next trip of the steamer, aud trusted that when he returned to them, at the close of the session, he should be found to have merited the confidence which the'electors now placed in him. Mr. White, being present, said that when he issued his address there was no other candidate in the field, and had he been aware that Mr. Curtis or any other gentleman could devote the time necessary to represent them, he should not have come forward; that he was not a man of business, and was almost unknown in the district : his occupations were purely political, Captain Fearon said that the electors ought to be very much obliged to Mr. White for coming forward. The meeting then separated.
