RUNNING AMOK.
HORRIBLE TRAGEDY ON A STEAMEK.
A horrible outrage occurred recently on board the Eastern ateamer tfri Pontianak. The veß3el was approaching Singapore on her voyage from Pontianak, wtfbn two Malays, father and son, ran amok on board the ship. How the amok began is not clearly made out, but one account alludes to irritation on the part- of the elder fanatic at the noises made by the crew in the working of the ship. The irritation, whatever it was, whether oi internal suggestion or of casual outside provocation, started the older man at 01100 on a career of innrder with the bare steel among the unprotected bodies of the hapless people sleeping or resting all around. Before the captain's revolver could interrupt this carnival of murder, five persons were killed on the spot, all Chinese, three men, one woman, one child; ihirteen people were wounded, including the Bon of tlio " amoker," several Chinamen, two women, and four children. Of these, it is possible that two or three will not recover. The fan .tic was shot dead by the captain.
