At a dinner given to Mr Warden Broad ou the occasion of hia leaving ihe Lyell district, that gentleman said that be was in hopes he would have remained there long enough to see the low levels tested, for he believed they would be found to be very rich, and he was confident that, before loDg, a continuous line of reef would be opened up from Reefton, through Boatman's and Lyell, to Mohikinui. The Picton Press says that the works in connection with the Picton and Blenheim railway are progressing very well, and before long union will be mude between the two ends of the linp. Some individual who, to say the least, is not wise in his generation, has forwarded the following telegram Irom Nelson to the Picton Press: — "Severul cases of fever have broken out in' Waimea-street, two persons named Merrington and Sedgwick having died therefrom." Perhaps our contemporary wßl^Jje good enough to inform his reader® that only one death has occurred, and that the other patients who vr&vo attacked by the fever which at this time of year brpaks out in a greater or less degree in most of the New Zealand towns, are recovering, while no fresh cases hove occurred. The Otago Times ascribes Otago's defeat at cricket io Canterbury and shooting in Aucklaud to the want of encouragement to athletic sports. It says "all the evils of a deose population are growing up here, loose habits, had drainage, and low temptations being acquired without any ameliorating circumstances.".. An attempt to form a cornpauy for the purpose of building a new theatre in Christchurch haa failed, £6000 was wanted, but only £2000 was forthcoming. Mr J. T. Leathes, hon. see. of the Nelson Regatta Committee, has forwarded to Wellington a complete list of events which comprise the programme for the Neleou Regatta to be held on Thursday, the 22ad inst. The rowing and yachting men of this city are invited to compete, and it is probable the invitation will be accepted. In the yacht race a stipulation is named that vessels shall not, exceed 25ft. on keel— a rule which unintentionally excludes tho crack Xarifa — but no doubt the committee, when a letter forwarded by Mr Logan reaches them, will deem it wise to rescind this restriction. The steamer Manawatu will probably be laid on as the excursion boat on the occasion. — JW. Z. Times. The Marlborough Express says that Mr Guy, formerly of Nelson, and recently clerk of tbe Resident Magistrate's Court at Napier, has obiained leave of absence, to enable him to visit Europe. Mr. Frederick H&rdman, who for about tweniy-five years has acted as correspondent of the London Times in different pnrta of Europe, has just died at Paris at the age of sixty-one. The Times, in concluding an obituary notice of the deceased gentleman, observes: —"Nothing save an analysis of the contents of this journal ior many years back would enable any one to appreciate tbe extent and magnitude of hie work."
