ELECTION OF MAYOR.

The City Council met at their office last evening, when all the membrra wero present, Cr Percy occupying tho chair. Cr Fell eaid that tho meeting was held for the purpose of electiug a Mayor, the first Mayor of Nelson. It was possible that n portion of the outside public were rather jealous that they had not the power to elect a Major from amongst themselves, but he boped the Councillors would always have amongst their number a gentleman having their entire confidence, as well as tl.a l". of the oiher burgesses, and he felt this was parti-u---larly so with the gentleman he proposed. Cr Dodson was one of the oldest members of the late Board of Works, and had taken great interest in the welfare of the town ; be was, moreover, a gentleman in whose uprightness ai;d integrity they had ever? corn fence, an 1 he hid reason to believe that ihe public would be perfectly sati-flel with ther choi c. He proposed Cr Dodson. Cr R. Burn would like to have thi honor of seconding this proposition, he thorouahly concurred with what had fallen from Cr Fell. He thought the public should be tatiffibd tint the Board would not a^k any man to act as Mayor, but one in whom everybody would have cor fidence. Cr Dodson was then unanimously elected tho first Mayor of Nelson, amidst applause. Tl.c Mayor, on taking the chair, rose and siid he cou'd scarcely find words in which to thank theen for the honor they had conferred upon him, or for the kir.d words which had fallen from Cr Fell. He trusted that Councillors would always give him their assistance and advice; he could a«sure thim nothing should be wanting on his part, and with their support he hoped to fill the office with credit to himself aud the Council, and to the good of the City. Cr Fell said that although the Board of Works had changed its nam-.- it was not dead; he would like a vote of thanks to their late Chairman to appear on the minutes. Mr Percy had filled the onerous positii n of Chairman for a lo g period with great fairness and dignity which had alwaya commanded his respect. Ihe office could not poesibly have been filled betttr than by Mr Percy; he proposed a vote of thanks to that gentleman. Cr Hoopbßc in seconding the motion, fully endor-ed all that had fallen from Cr Fell. Cr Fekcy replied in acknowledgement. The Ma yob sugges cd that in accordance with a c-ause in the Act, Councillors should make declarations to the effect that they would faithfully and impartially, according to the be-t of their skill and judgment, execute all powers and authorities repose 1 in them as Councillors by virtue of the Municipal Corporations Act, and the declarations were duly attested. It was agreed that Council should continue to meet on alternate Fridays, at 7 o'clock. The question of taking over from the Superintendent the City reserves, &c, was discussed. borne of the Councillors were of opinion that a letter should be written to the Superintendent asking him to hind over such reserves under clause 8 of the Municipal Corporation Act. The Surveyor waa requite 1 to prepare plain and specifications for t'e sewerage works to be carried out in Hardy-street and Nile Btreet VV eat,and to lay them before the Council nt their next sitting, in cr.ier that the workß miy be proceeded with as early aa possible.
