MR JUSTICE REED.

A DEFINITE ANNOUNCEMENT,

(Special Correspondent.) WELLINGTON, This Day. The appointment of J. R. Heed, K.C., o£ Auckland,, to the Supreme Court Bench was announced yesterday. Mr Reed, it is stated, w?ll not be ready to take up his duties for some weeks. The impending resignation of Sir Joshua Cooper will create another vac. ancy presently.

Mr Reed is at present head of the legal firm of Messrs Reed, Towle, Hellaby and Cooper. Ha has had a distinguished career. Born in Ipswich, Queensland, on December 26, 1864, Mr Reed is the eldest son of the late Rev, George McCullagh Reed. He was educated at the Auckland Grammar School, the High Schoil, Victoria College, Jersey, and Clare College in the University of Cambridge. He served his articles with Messrs Devore and Cooper, solicitors, of Auckland, and was admitted to the New Zealand Bar on June 18, 1887. He practised as a barrister and solicitor at the Bay of Islands until January, 1896, coming thence to Auckland, where he has since been practising. Under the territorial system of defence, Mr Reed was lieu, tenant-colonel in command of the 3rd, Auckland, Infantry Regiment, retiring with the rank of colonel in 1911. . In the same year he was appointed Judge Advocate-General for New Zealand, a position he still holds. For his services in this capacity he wa>3, in 1919, awarded the 0.8. E. In 1913 he was appointed a K.C. Mr Reed has always taken a keen interest in education, and was for many years chairman of the Kawakawa School Committee. Subsequently he was a member of the Auckland Education Board. He has held the position of president of the Auck. land Law Society, president of the Auckland Club, and president of the Auckland Garrison Officers' Club. He has taken a prominent part in Freemasonry, having formerly held, for a period of seven years, the position of j District Grand Master for Auckland under the English constitution.
