The funeral took place from the hospital yesterday of Mr James Broad, who had until lately been aoting as manager to Mr W. G. 0. Smith, at Orona Bridge. The late Mr Broad died on Wednesday last, and a large number of friends attended his funeral at Terrace End.

Mr I. Fake has resigned his position as referee to the Manawatn Boxing Association by reason of the sriticism of his decision in the Rollo-Tracey match. Mr Fake states that he repeatedly warned Tracy with regard to fonl blows, and was at length compelled to give his decision against him.

We regret to announce the death of another old settler in the person ef Mrs James Hanley, who passed away, after a short illness, lasting three days, at her son's residence in Fergusson street. Mr and Mrs Hanley arrived from Cork in the early fifties and settled in Auckland where they wore well known and respected by all with whom they came in contact.

An extension until the end of De•enaber, says the Post, has been made in connection with the" low freights charged for carriage of New Zealand hemp and tow by the Shaw, Savill, and Albion Company, the New Zealand Shipping Company, and the African Steamship Company. Ihe eervices of the Rqv. H. Mason, the Otahuhu "water finder" are iu growing request. He is under promise to visit Feilding next month, ami now the Eastbourne Borough OoHncil, Wellington, is anxious to get a good water supply, either by •reek or artesian bore. The Council approached Mr Mason, and in reply he eaid he did not charge any fee far discovering water in his own district, but tliat if he came to Wellington he would require that his personal expenses be paid. He would ask the Council, should he discover water, to pay £5 to tho funds of his ohurch at Otahuhu. The Council agreed.
