The Bruce Election.

Intense interest was taken in the polling for Bruce on Wednesday, the excitement throughout the electorate having been worked up to fever heat. The Minister for Public Works had a mixed reception at Mr Lee- Smith's meeting at Milton, but eventually carried the meeting with him. At Kaitangata Mr Scobie McKenzie made a slashing speech at Mr Allen's meeting. All day Mr Allen's supporters were confident, but did not expect much more than a majority of 150, but as booth after booth gave him a majority the excitement at Milton was great, and when it was beyond doubt that Allen was elected, his supporters carried him shoulder high through the town. The complete returns are— Allen, 1085 ; A. Lee-Smith, 538 ; majority for Allen, 557. The total number of voters on the Bruce roll is 2162, and 1613 of these recorded their votes, while at the general election 1250 votes were recorded. — Press Association.
