ABOUT NEWSPAPERS.
London Correspondent.
The' new weekly pennyworth of fiction and fudge which Mrs : Arthur Stannard (" John Strange. Winter") will publish about Easter is to be called Golden Gates. Its distinguishing characteristics will be no serial. Each number is to be complete m itself, containing a .novellette by ■ some writer of repute, a short story, the " Editor's Thoughts" (a column of gossip written by Mrs Stannard), arid other matter. The. first English edition will consist of 100,000 copies and special arrangements are being made for American and Australian issues. Mrs Lovett Cameron does the novelette for number one, and Mrs Stannard herself the short story. Despite the fact that the artistic excellence of. Blade and^ White inoreases with every issue, I fear it has not "caught on" very satisfactorily. This, at any rate, is what the bookstall clerks say, and they generally know. Yet the third number is a magnificent one. Finer illustrations have never been seen m a weekly paper. The letterpress may possibly have-to be run on more popular lines.. Many of thß"para" are heavy and commonplace. • .. : Mr A. M. Broadley, who disappeared with startling suddenness two years ago amidst a cloud of nauseous gossip andsurmise, has turned up again at Brussels, and been writing for the World from that city.. He will, it is announced, return to London shortly, and resume the position he previously occupied on Edmund- Yates' paper. One wonders whether- the fact of "Atlas" having declared" war against an exalted personage, has anything to do with this unexpected resurrection. Everybody knows it was H.R.H. caused' Broadley Pasha's extinction. ., Edmund = had liot strength of mind then to resist the Boyal flat. Now, however, it may have occurred to him" that Mr Broadley would be a useful ally. ■• . •■ -•'.■■ ■-■: ; :
