Our old friend Captain Thomson, with the ship Derwentwater, arrived in this harbour on Wednesday afternoon, about 4 o'clock, after a very long and tedious passage of about 120 days from land to land. She sailed from Gravesend on the sth September, and experienced south-west winds down the channel, and very light north-easters over the Bay of Biscav; crossed the line on the 20th October, in long. 33° W.; met with good south east trades, and was abreast of the Cape on the 25th November; had light winds from the west till off Kerguelen's Lar.d, then a succession of heavy gales from the same quarter. On Sunday, January 4, had a severe hurricane from the south-west, also a storm from the south-west on 'the 7th, which assisted the ship to the beads. She brings a good cargo for Canterbury (about 800 tons); also some valuable fowls from the Sydenham Palace Poultry Exhibition, of 1862, consigned to Dr. Lillie and Mr. Moore, of Gleumark. They comprise good specimens of the Dorking and bparnsh kinds; also a fine lot of pigs, of the Berkshire breed, and four valuable Merino rams for Major Coote. Sjie has also a small number of cabin ana second-cabin passengers. It appears that Captain Thomson expected to leave home a month earlier for Lyttelton, and was desirous to be out in time for our regatta. He brings with him a.fine four-oared racing gig, built by Wylde, of London, ihis boat was the property of the celebrated excursion crew who are known to have gained ail the

best prizes in the South Coast, and at many of the regattas on the Continent. He is desirous of giviug the English Opera a trial.
