Country District. \/7i ENTLEMEN, —The Fourth Session - VU~ of the Qeneral Assembjy4s now.upon. the eve of closing,^ud, as-circumstances haVe arisen' .which render my absence from the: cqloivy 'for a short time imperative, I take this opportunity of addressing you for the purpose of informing you that I have resigned uyr seat in the House of Representatives. I thought it my duty to do so, to provide against the contingency of my not having returned previous to the sitting of the next session, and the move so, as parties are so equally balanced as the "House is at present constituted. However, you will per- | ceive by referring to the divisions upon all great questions during this session, that my vote alone has frequently kept a Ministry from falling. I regret that my colleague (MrMlall) did not act in conjunction with myself. Had he done so, it would have prevented two-thirds of the session being wasted in angry and fruitless discussion. It is gratifying to me,sthough, to know that I haye 4 assisted in obtaining Responsible Government —in permanently adjusting the public burdens of the colony—in procuring to the provinces the sole control of their own Waste Lands —in greatly improving the Administration of Justice, —as also in securing an improved : home as well as intercolonial postal communication ; several other measures, also, of a most useful nature, have received the sanction of the House. It only remains for me to say that I have done everything which I believed to be conducive to the welfare of the colony, without infringing the just rights of Canterbury. 1 have lent myself to ho party —I have steered my course conscientiously and disinterestedly. I deeply regret that I am so soon compelled to resign the honorable trust you have reposed in me. Allow me to return you my warmest thanks for the confidence you placed in me, and to assure you that, should it be your pleasure to re-elect me upon my return to Canterbury, I shall be most happy to give you my humble services.
