The nomination of a gentleman to fill the vacancy created in the Proviucial Council of the Province, by the retirement of Captain Simeon, took place at Christchurch; on Friday last. H. J.Tancued, Esq., the returning officer, presiding. The precept having been read,Capt. Scott came forward, and, in a few words, proposed C. 3

Bridge, Esq., as a fit and proper person to be elected lo the office.—The nomination was seconded hy Mr. Rowley.— Mr. Ollivier then proposed Dr. Moore. He alluded to the position that gentleman had occupied in England, —that of Mayor of Salisbury, the duties of which office had, in a great measure, fitted him for that which he now sought at the hands of the electors. —Mr. Thomson having seconded the nomination, the Returning Officer asked if there was any other candidate to be proposed, whereupon Mr. Hichens came forward and expressed his regret, that the absence of his friends, who had promised to propose him, had placed him in the novel, but he believed not unconstitutional position, of being obliged to nominate himself. —The candidates then proceeded to address the electors. Mr. Bridge and Dr. Moore touched upon the several topics that were then before the public, and pledged themselves to support the construction ofthe road to Lyttelton by way of Sumner. Both were also in favour of the immediate formation of a tram road. —Mr. Hichens then advanced aud spoke at considerable length. He touched upon the various subjects which had been under consideration in the Council, the Waste Lands Bill, the Lyttelton Corporation Bill, Education, Roads, the Association's affairs, &c, &c, and concluded by saying, that if not elected this time, he should present himself to the notice of the electors again on some future occasion.—A show of hands being called for, the Returning Officer declared the election to be;in favour of Dr. Moore; a poll was then demanded by Messrs. Hichens and Bridge. —The poll was opened at nine o'clock on Saturday, and continued until four o'clock. There was considerable excitement created by the election throughout the day, the supporters of Dr. Moore being exceedingly active on that gentleman's behalf.
