A GALLANT EXPLOIT.

TURKISH PARAPET DESTROYED

An exploit which was accomplished by Sergeants Tilsley and Holland, of Rotorua, is described in a letter from an Aucklander who is serving at Galhpoli (says the Star). "On June 8," tne letter reads, "when the Auckland Battalion was at Quinn's Post, it was found that we were losing heavily on account of 'cricket-ball bombs/ thrown from a Turkish trench about fifty yards in front of our position, so volunteers were called for to rush the trench, and, if possible, destroy the parapet so that we could keep it clear by rifle fire.

' Sergeants Tilsley and Holland, of the Hauraki Company, led a small band of men across in the face of a murderous fire, and succeeded in surprising the occupants of the bombthrowing trench and taking a number of prisoners, w«ho wore speedily rushed back to our lines before the' enemy could re-commence their bomb fusillade from another position just in the rear. Our boys found that the men who had earned explosives for the purpose of wrecking the trench had fallen whilst crossing the open space, so they were compelled to retire and to make another attempt two nights later. "On this occasion the attempt was made by men of the. Third (Auckland) Company, but at the request of the colonel the two Hauraki sergeants took charge, and were at the last moment joined by Lieuts. Corbett and \Y estmacott, also of the Haurakis. Ihe trench was destroyed, but Lieut. Corbett has never been heard of since, whilst Lieut. Westmacott had his leg so badly shattered as to require amputation. The gallant Tilsley had his hand smashed by a bullet/ Sergeant Holland alone, of the leaders, regained Ins trench umvounded, although he was terribly shaken and dazed by a bomb which exploded alongside of him."
