THE GREAT DERBY RACE.

By our English cablegrams we received the intelligence that the great Derby has been rim, arid won by Silvio ; Glenvarth, second ; and Rob Roy, third. It is probable that there is some mistake made in the transmission of the name of the second, which must be either Ohamant or Chevron, or else some " rank outsider" only recently named. Silvio, the winner of this great event, is the property of Lord Falniouth, and is by Blair Athol, out of Silver Hair, trained by Mat. Dawson. Assuming that the second is Chamant, we find that he is the property of Count Legrange, by Mortimer out of Arancaria. This colt was first favorite for the Derby. He won the Two Thousand §uinea Stakes at Epsom, ridden by Tom Jennings. As a two year-old lie sustained several defeats, but won the, Middle Park Plate and the Dewhm'st Plate. The betting on the Derby by the latest intelligence we have was — 6 to 1 against Chamant S— 1 — Pelligrini 8— 1 — Plunger 10—1 — Rob Eoy 100 — 7 — Morier 100 — 7 — Actceon 100 — 5 — Lady Golightly 100 — 7 — Touchet 100 — 3 — Silvio 100 — 5 — Month — It will be seen from this list that Silvio was in low ranks in the betting, although he ran third in the Two Thousand Guinea Stakes, and in the previous year won four out of five times that he ran, having been only beaten once, and on that occasion it was by .a colt, the property of Count Legrange, named Verneuil," by Mortimer, out of Regalia. This colt was not, however, engaged for the Derby, Count Legrange pinning his faith on his other colt, Chamant. Rob Roy, which takes third place, is the property of Mr J. T. Mackenzie, and is by Blair Athol, out of Columbia, and was for a long time looked upon as sure of a place. It was stated that he was a roarer, but this statement proved to be incorrect. He has been trained by Fred. Bates, and won the New Stakes and the Biennial Stakes at Ascot, and was looked upon as not an unlikley horse for the Great Derby race. Intelligence has not yet reached us as to the number which started or the places of the others ; but Lord Falmouth must congratulate himself on being the owner of the winner of the Derby. — N.Z.
