MAYORAL INSTALLATION.

■' ' '•'" ♦ • — — At noon yesterday the installation of George Edward Perkins, as Mayor of Greymouth, was held. '..'•■ Mr Perkins then was installed in the chair The retiring Miayor welcomed Mayor Perkins to the chair. He said the contest had been very friendly fought, and Cr Perkins had obtained a large majority. He felt sure Mr Perkins would do good work as Mayor of the town. He hoped ithe councilors would give him every support. Before retiring he thanked tho Press for the way iji which they had reported the borough proceedings. Mr Perkins then took the oath, of Mayor. Cr Kerr congratulated Mr Perkins on being appointed to the position. He (Kerr) had been a contestant, but he assured ihe Mayor he would receive , h's support. Cr, Sweetman congratulated the Mayer and saM he felt sure Mr Perkins would do goo*d work. He also express ed regret that Mr Ru-ssell was retir-/ inff. . • Cr Tenncnv also spoke in a similar ■ strain, and wished the Mayor a successful term qf office. • Cr Doogan said he felt sure the Ma- ] yor's term would be a year of good solid work. He offered h's congratulations. Cr. Byrne said he was sincere in his congratulations. ■. Mr Perkins should feel proud of assuming the high position of Mayor. The Council was a clean body and he felt sure that under Mr Perkins it would continue to be so. He .wished the Miayor a prosperous year of office. Cr. Sheedy offered his congratulations and said he would do his utmost to assist, the Mayor during his term. Cr Grcenslade said he wished the Mayor a prosperous term of office. During the year he would endeavour to work for the policy that they had formulated in the past. Cr Russell said all the members had said good tilings, but the Mayor \va,s only an ordinary person. (Laughver). Seriously he wished the Mayor a prosperous year. He paid a compliment Co 'the late Mayor who had done good work for the borough. At first he was in opposition to- the late Mayor, but lavcly he had been with him. The Mayor thanked the Councilors most heanily for their congratulations. He would carry out a policy of economy during the year and endeavour to reduce the bank overdraft from £7000 to ,£SOOO. It would be the duty to put their house in order as soon as possible. Be thanked Cr.. Kerr for the way he had carried out the election. Iv was one of the most honorable in the Dominion. He regretted the departure of Mr RusseJJ. The public did not recognise his good work at present, but in years to come they would. In conclusion he felt confident that he would have the support of his . councillors. He moved thav a hearty vote of thanks be accorded to Mr A. C. Russell, the retiring- mayor, for his past work Cr. Russell seconded" and said the late mayor .got a lot of kudos that belonged to the councillors. Tho mayor had done good work however.

Mr A. •C- Russell thanked the councillors for the resolution. He said he was pleased Cr. Russell had seconded the resolution. It was thought that .hey were at difference with each other but Cr Russell was one of the best councillors at the table. As Chairman of the Works Committee, Cr Russell was a tower of. strength. He was looked upon as the father of the Council. The councillors had carried out tho reform ' policy, and he hoped bliat Mr. Goodall, who had bean nominated for the vacancy on. the Council, would >be returned. He thanked the office staff for. their kindness to him. They had a staff equal to, any in the. Dominion. He paid a compliment, to' Mrs Linn, the caretaker, for the excellent work she had done. Az the invitation of the Mlayor the councillors and . staff were onlertainod at dinner at the Albion Hotel. ■ ■ ' ' 'I
