DEAD HEiAT FOR £10,000

The race for the Eclipse Stakes — the only race worth £10,000 now run •for in the Old Country — at Sandown Park last "^Friday, resulted in a dead heat between Mr Fairies Lemberg", the winner of the Derby, and Lord Rosebery's Two Thousand Guineas victor, Neit-Gow. So the much discussed question as to "which of these two "horses of the year" is the better rem ain s undecided . Few racegoers can remember anything so exciting as this year's rivalry between these three-year-olds. They met as two-year-olds, and Noil Gow beat Lemberg at Doncaster, but Lemberg proved himself so great in other •races that throughout the winter he was a firm favourite for the Derby. They met in the Two Thousand Guineas in April, when Neil Gow beat Mr Gairie's crack by a head. Everyone then looked forward to a thrilling race for the Derby. The entire racing world was divided into two camps. One party swore by Lord Rosebery's colt, and the other by Mr Fairki's. .Unfortunately, a few days before the great Festival, Neil Gow threw out a curb and though he took part in the Derby, and was confidently supported by his adherents, he was never in the race so far as any winning prospects were concerned. Thereafter, Eowever, the JLcmbergers boasted of the superiorit}' of their favourite to Neil Gow, and in spite of Lemberg' s failure in the Grand Prix de Paris they would not hear of his being beaten at Sandown by anything — least of all by .Neil "Gow. On "the other hand, the admirers of Lord Rosebery's colt and "the stable" were confident that Neil Gow would turn the tables on the Derby winner, and backed their fancy heavily: ~\ There were six horses in the race — a miserable field with such a prize at stake. The race produced one of the imost sensational finishes seen for some time. Both .Neil Gow and Lemberg were troublesome at the post, but the start was excellent. Lemberg had the lead entering the straight. On his left was Placidus with Neil Gow up between the pair, and at the distance 'nearly drew level with Lemberg. Dillon cast a glance at his rival, and then began a determined fight ■between the favourites. Both jockeys used their whips freely, and sixty yards t:om home Neil Gow" had drawn up. Tooth and nail •they fought out the issue, and though Lemberg got his head in front again, Maher managed to close up in the last stride, and made a dead-heat of it. There was vigorous cheering all round, when the decision was given, and, as was expected, . stakes were divided. Lord Rosebery and Mr Fairie share £10,000 less £115, which Mr .Wigan receive, as the own of Placidus, who finished t'h'irrl. Lemberg has won £13,840 in stakes and Neil Gow £11,635.
