It i 3 notified in the Westland Gazette that Mr F. E. Clarke has been appointed Chief draughtsman in the Survey Department, vice J. P. Browning,, resigned. Mr John Harrington is appointed toll collector at the Hekitika Town Boundary ; and Mr T. K. Christian is appointed Thistle Inspector under the Canterbury " Thistle Ordinance, IGCO." — — " We learn from the West Coast Times that hi 3 Honor the Superintendent has lately received from Swizerland a letter from a gentleman residing in that country who is desirous of emigrating to Westland and bringing with him a number of Swiss immigrants, with the intention of settling in the southern part of this Province. The writer, who appears to have acquainted himself with the nature of the country in these parts, seems to consider that Westland would be eminently suitable as a place of settlement for natives of Switzerland, accustomed as they are to the exigencies of life in a mountainous country. The Officer Commanding the District has received from the Defence Officer a circular showing the result of the firing of the Volunteer Cadets in the Colony. In accordance with the regulations for the General Government prizes, the thirty highest scorers in the Colony will again compete for the purpose of deciding the winner of the Cadet Champion Belt for the current year. The highest scorer is Lieut. Fear son, of the Thames Cadet Engineer Corps, with a score of 66 points. The Hokitika Cadets have one representative among the thirty — Lieut. Lloyd — who will fire here for the championship some time during this week. It is understood that an amending Bankruptcy Bill will be introduced next session, but it will only deal with those matters of detail which experience shows require amendment. The principle of the present Act will not be interfered with. The two men who lost their lives by the foundering of a boat in Lake Wakatip were named Hodges and Casper. They were sailing to witness the regatta. One of the three occupants, named Samm'ers, was saved. The Westport Hospital is now clear of patients for the first time for nine years. A moa's egg containing a young bird has been fouud at Picton. The egg was broken during its removal, but the pieces of the shell were saved, and the immature bird is in a good slate of preservation. A man named J. K. Price, i a well-known hotelkeeper in the Wanganui district, committed suicide the other day by jumping from the Wanganui Bridge. This bridge ia being as ce^brated in its way as Waterloo or Westminster — this being the third successful suicide, whilst there have been several frustrated attempts within a very few months.
