The answer from head-quarters at Wellington, with regard to the interpretation of the clause of the Municipal Corporations Act, which regulates the retirement of councillors, has been received by Mr Revell, R.M., and we are informed that the result of the inquiry has been that one-third of the newlyelected Council retire on the 10th mst., and that the first- meeting of the Council is to be held on the 16th inst. The Act requires that one-third of the councillors of ever)' Borough shall retire

on the second Thursday in every September, and in the present case this occurs before the first meeting of the Council, so that three of the gentlemen who were lately' elected must come again before their constituents ere they can sit as councillors for the Borough. These gentlemen are Messrs Magoffiu, Rae, and Kilgour, all representatives of the Upper Township, all of whom will, no doubt, come forward for re-election, but there iB almost sure to be other candidates in the field for the honor of representing Greymouth jn its first Municipal Council. The telegram to which we have referred further intimates that the election will take place before the person appointed by the Governor for that purpose, whose appointment would be intimated by future telegram, Fourteen clear days' notice of the election must be given by advertisement, so that it is probable the first meeting of the Council will be held minus three representatives of one section of the town, But this is optional, as the first meeting can be held on the appointed day, «' or as soon thereafter as conveniently may be," and we imagine ifc is not convenient to hold the first meeting until the whole of the councillors are returped, as it ia inquired by the Act that at the first meeting of the Council the members present will proceed to elect their Mayor, We hope this step will not be taken, as a one-sided election of this sort will be sure to revive the old local jealousies and heart-burnings which it was hoped the recent election had buried for ever.
