TO-DAY'S NEWS.

LIEUT. ANTHONY WILDING.

From Tennis to the Royal Marines.

A British Military Expert Predicts a Long War.

Turkey Officers Her Fleet with Germans

Premier Asquith on British Treaties.

To-day's news contains a personal and a national surprise: Anthony Wilding, the brilliant New Zealander, having conquered the world at tennis, now enters a fresh field—he has become a subaltern in the Royal Marines. Turkey is reported to have put German officers in charge of her fleet, superseding British officers.- Thus both the army and navy of the Turks are now controlled by Germans. If it is true that the Sultan has issued such a proclamation, then he has signed the death warrant of Turkey in Europe. The Times military expert (who has not been a successful prophet'so far.) predicts a long war. The cables contain some more episodes of gallant individual deeds. Premier Asquith 5 at a mass meeting, clearly set out Britain's peaceful attitude towards Germany before the war.
