————^#- MR. J. VIGOR BROWN
(P.A.) . , . : NAPIER, September 2. The. death has occurred of Mr. John Vigor Brown/aged 88. Born in Scotland in 1854, Mr. Brown emigrated as a yOuth and completed his; education in. Melbourne, where he was afterwards apprenticed to Sargood", King, and Sargood. He came to New Zealand in 1875 and was two years with A. P. Stewart and Company, Wellington. He became Napier branch manager'of Archibald Clark and Sons, and in 1898 manager of Neai and Close, later managing director,' and also managing director of J. Vigor Brown and Co., White Swan Brewery, Hawke's Bay 'Soap and Tannery, • etc.,. and a director of tlie Napier Gas Company. He played a- big part "in the public affairs of Napier as. well as its business interests; and was member of Parliament from 1908 to 1922. He served for various periods oh the Napier Harbour Board, and was chairman from 1904 to 1911. He was.at one time a member of the. Borough ; Council, Mayor from 1907 to 1917, 1919 to 1921, and 1929 to 1933. In addition, he was president of the Thirty Thousand Club, for 23 years a Governor of the High School, and also held office with the Napier Park Racing Club, Chamber of Commerce, ahd Caledonian Society.
