OBITUARY
MR. F. H. HOBBS
Advice Was received in Christchurch recently of the death in London of Mr. Frederick 'H. Hobbs, manager for Mr. Rupert DOyly Carte (Gilbert and Sullivan Operas). Mr. Hobbs was a member of a Christchurch family well known in musical and rowing circles, and five of his brothers are still living there. Mr. Hobbs left Christchurch in his early twenties to take up a musical career in England, and after studying in the Guildhall School of Music for some years, joined the DOyly, Carte Gilbert and Sullivan Opera Company. For many years he sang the leading baritone roles, and in 1920 he was engaged by J. C. Williamson, Ltd., to tour Australia. On his return to England he was appointed manager of Mr. DOyly Carte's companies, and he held this position up to the time of his death. '■■
