MID-CANTERBURY SEAT
LABOUR PARTY DECISION
The Prime Minister (Mr. Fraser) announced today that the Labour Party had decided that it would not contest the Mid-Canterbury seat rendered vacant by the death in action of Major A. N. Grigg.
"The Labour Party in the electorate feels that a by-election contest at the present time would be reprehensible in its effect upon the,good feeling and good fellowship of the people of the district, which is so essential at present, and would be most inimical to war effort unity," Mr. Fraser said. "They also feel that appreciation of Major Grigg's devotion, courage, and final sacrifice can best be shown by, a decision to refrain from contesting the seat'and thus avoiding a party contest with its inevitable strife and bad feeling. They are of the opinion that the best tribute of respect they could pay to the memory of their late member is to maintain a united war effort at this time."
