MR. ROBERT HOGG

Mr. Robert Hogg, whose death at the age of 77 occurred at his residence, Johnsonyille, today, was a firm believer in the principles of Socialism and in former years particularly-spared no effort through an active association with journalism and through per-, sonal contacts to advance his views. While he was generally at variance with the .policy adopted by trades union leaders in New Zealand, he was highly respected for His opinions and formed many enduring friendships.

Mr. Hogg was born at Blochairn, Lanarkshire, Scotland, where, as owner and editor of a Musselburgh newspaper, he became closely associated -with/thei Socialist Party in Great Britain. He brought his family out to New Zealand in 1900, and after a short interval again took up journalism in Wellington. For varying periods he was associated with the "New Zealand Times," "New- Zealand Truth,', of which he was for a time managing editor, the "Maoriland Worker" as editor, and publisher of a small Socialist periodical, "The Common Weal." He was an authority on Scottish literature and had several works in prose'and poetry of his own published in Paisley. He was a vicepresident 'of the Wellington Burns Club and honorary bard of the Glasgow United Burns Clubs. Mr. Hogg leaves a wife, four sons, of whom, the eldest is Mr. Kobert Hogg, of Johnsonville, and two daughters, Mrs. John Walker, of Palmerston North, and Mrs. Lionel Bramley, of JoHnsonville.*
