SIR JOHN R. SINCLAIR

Obituary: Sir John Robert Sinclair, formerly a member of the Legislative Council. ■

Prior to his appointment to the Legis : lative Council in 1907, Sir John Sinclair was known as one of the soundest lawyers in Dunedin, a quiet, •undemonstrative, but learned gentleman who had taken but little part in public life outside his profession. In that capacity, Sir John was solicitor for the Dunedin' City Corporation and other local municipal bodies, and also for the Dunedin Drainage Board at its inception. For, some years he was chairman of the* Otago High Schools Board, and he was on the directorates of. a number of financial companies.

Throughout his membership of the Legislature Sir John Sinclair conspicuously refrained from participation in the smaller matters of politics, and devoted himself mainly to important constitutional and Imperial questions. Upon both these branches he was recognised as one of the highest authorities in Parliament, and his pronouncements always carried weight. Sir John represented New Zealand on the Dominions Royal Commission, 1912-17. He was 90 years of age.
