PONT L'EVEQUE'S WIN

THE NEW DERBY

BOUGHT AT BARGAIN PRICE

(From "The Post's" Representative.)

LONDON, June 13

The Derby was run yesterday, though not on Epsom Downs. It was called the New Derby and was contested at Newmarket instead of at Newbury, as was originally intended. The attendance was very large, indeed, so great was the crowd that latecomers were unable to obtain face cards..

Pont l'Eveque, a colt who had not been entered for the original Derby and who because of the war was sold for £500 last October, gained an easy victory of three lengths from H.H. Aga Khan's Turkhan, with Lord Derby's Lighthouse II (the favourite) a head away third. The value of the race was £5892.

Pont l'Eveque is owned and trained at Beckhampton by Fred Darling. He bought the horse from his breeder, Mr. H. E. Morris, and he recently offered to sell back a half-share, but Mr. Morris did not accept the offer. When the field came into view Pont l'Eveque, ridden by S. Wragg, was leading with Romolus, and half a mile from.home Black Toni, Lighthouse 11, and Turkhan had moved up. Below the distance Lighthouse II made his challenge and for a moment looked lik coming through to win, but Wragg had only to give Pont l'Eveque one reminder, and the colt immediately lengthened his stride, to draw away up the hill and win in most impressive style. Lighthouse II struggled on< gallantly, but he was tiring last, and Turkhan robbed him of second place. Pont l'Eveque is the sixth Derby winner trained by F. Darling, whose other triumphs were gained with Bois Roussel, Cameronian, Coronach, Manna, and Captain Cuttle. The race was run in the fast time of 2min 30 4-5 sec, being 2-ssec outside the record for the course. S. Wragg's previous classic victories were gained on Rockfel in the One Thousand Guineas, and on Chatelaine in the Oaks.

Gordon Richards only said, "Just my luck!" He was on the wrong stable runner for the third time hi the Derby! His mount, Tant Mieux, was waited with, but he lacked real stamina in a true-run race and finished fourth. There is not much doubt, it is thought, that Richards would have ridden the winner in preference to Tant Mieux if he had. been allowed to do so. . His trainer, howeyer, thought it best to put the stable jockey up on his patron's horse rather than on his own. Tant Mieux belongs to H.H. the Maharaja, of Kolhapur.
