THE DERBY STAKES

F. DARLING'S SIXTH WIN

(By Telegraph—l'ress Association—Copyright. I (Received June 13, 10.30 a.m.)

LONDON, June 12. England's leading .classic race was decided at Newmarket today, and the result was:as follows:— NEW DERBY STAKES, a sweepstakes with £2000 added; second 10 percent. and third 5 per cent, of whole stakes; for three-year-old entire colts and. fillies; Suffolk Stakes course, 1£ miles.

F. Darling's b c Pont l'Eveque, by Barneveldt —Ponteba, by Belfonds, 9.0 (S. Wragg) H.H. Aga Khan's b c Turkhan, by Bahram—Theresina, 9.0 (C. Smirks) Lord Derby's br c Lighthouse 11, by . Pharos—Pyramid, 9.0 (R. Perryman)

Sixteen started. Won by three lengths, a short head between second and. third. Winner bred in France by Mr. H. E. Morriss and trained by owner at Beckhampton, Wiltshire.

Pont l'Eveque is the sixth Derby winner, produced by the Beckhampton wizard, F. Darling, and the first to carry Darling's own colours. Darling's other winners were Captain Cuttle, Manna, Coronach, Cameronian, and Bois Roussel. Darling bought the colt from the estate of the late Mr. H. E. Morriss at the end of last year. As a two-year-old Pont l'Eveque started only twice, running second at Newmarket in October at his second appearance. He reappeared to win the Spring Maiden Plate at Newbury on April 13, then ran second to Lighthouse II in the Newmarket Stakes on May 22 at his next outing. He did not start in the Two Thousand Guineas. In many ways his career resembles that of April the Fifth, who was also still a maiden at.the beginning of his three-year-old career, but had'won the Birmingham Plate and the Lingfield Derby Trial Stakes prior to his Derby success t in 1932; By the irony of fate Gordon Richards rode Pont l'Eveque last season and also when he won at Newbury, but his mount yesterday was H.H. Maharajah of Kolhapur's Frenchbred candidate,. Tant Mieux. Richards has yet to ride a Derby winner. Pont l'Eveque gave S. Wragg his first Derby victory.
