Napier.—Anchored in the Napier roadstead last evening, the Nobel explosives vessel Miro was involved in a collision with the coastal vessel Koutunui. Both were damaged to a sufficient extent to make it necessary for them to go on the slip for repairs. It is estir mated that the Koutunui will be out of commisison for nine months. A hole three feet long arid two feet wide was torn in the side of the Miro. The opinion is expressed that had the Miro struck ten feet further aft both vessels would have been destroyed by the ignition of the Miro's cargo of explosives.—F.A. .JL'lLi DEATH OF MR. R. McC ALLUM. Mr. R. McCallum, former member of the House of Representatives for Wairau, and former member of the Legislative Council, " died in Blenheim this morning. BRITISH RAILWAY CHAOS. London.—-Snowploughs are being used on the main railway lines for the first time for 40 years. A statement by the railway companies explaining delays declares that it was the worst weather for a century. Fog lasted for twelve days and' snowstorms for several days, followed by the piling up of snowdrifts 12 feet high. The digging out of buried trains occupied up to 12 hours. The steani heating pipes froze in running trains. Some districts lost 25 per cent. of.. their railway staffs through overstrain and '-sickness. The traffic chaos in Yorkshire, where 35 degrees of frost has been registered, continues. Many villages are short of food, fuel, and drinking water.
