LATE HON. J. TREVETHICK

The Hon. Jonathan Trevethick, M.L.C., whose death at Auckland was reported yesterday, was born at Lostwithiel, Cornwall, in 1864, and came to New Zealand in 1888 with his wife, to whom he had been married shortly before sailing. On arrival in New Zealand he joined his brother, the late Mr. Charles Trevethick, in business at Lower Hutt, and in 1894 he went to Auckland and established a brush manufacturing business, which he car-

ried on till 1927, when his son, Mr, J. C. Trevethick, succeeded him.

Mr. Trevethick was elected to the Auckland City Council in 1910 and held a seat on that body till 1921, when he retired. He also served as a member of the Auckland and Suburban Drainage Board, and for 34 years, right up to the time of his death, he had been associated with the administration of the Auckland Sailors* Home, being president for two periods. He had also been a member of the- Board of Trustees of the Auckland Savings Bank. He had been a Justice of the Peace for 33 years.

Reared in the political atmosphere of Liberalism, on his arrival in New Zealand he became early associated with the LiberaKLabour organisation. He was for many years chairman of the Liberal Federation in Auckland. He was a foundation member of the United Political Party, and later was appointed president of the organisation for Auckland City and Province.

He was appointed to the Legislative Council in 1930 and was reappointed by the Labour Government about eighteen months ago. --

Mr. and Mrs. Trevethick celebrated their golden wedding last year. In addition to his widow, Mr. Trevethick is survived by one son, Mr. J. C. Trevethick, and four daughters, Mrs. G. Wickstead, Wellington, and Mrs.-F. D. Menzies, Mrs. P. Olsen, and Mrs. J. Dickey, Auckland.
