WELLINGTON SOUTH

NATIONAL PARTY CANDIDATE

Mr. David P. Howlett has been selected as the National Party candidate for the Wellington South electorate.

A son of the late Mr. Horatio Howlett, late of Dargaville, Mr. Howlett |is 44 years of age.' His father was one of the pioneers, and for many years was interested in the timber industry- in Northern Wairoa. Educated at the Dargaville primary school and then at the Helensville District High Sphool, Mr. Howlett has had considerable commercial experience in large concerns throughout New Zealand. He has been secretary for the Wellington South electorate committee for the past two years, and has occupied a responsible position on the headquarters staff of the National Party. These positions he has resigned in order to contest the Wellington South seat.

Mr. Howlett has an excellent war record. He enlisted on August 8, 1914, with the Ist Canterbury Infantry Regiment, and embarked*at Wellington with the Main Body. He was in the landing at Gallipoli, and later served in France. He was wounded on six different occasions—three times in France and three times on Gallipoli. He was awarded the Military Medal at the battle of the Somme in 1916. He gained his commission in the field. Mr. Howlett was wounded on the last occasion just a few days before the Armistice. He has had considerable experience as an athlete, boxingg, run-ning-track, and swimming.
