Enormous crowds were present at Epsom for the English Derby, which , resulted in a victory for the French- ( bred colt Bois Roussel, who came with a sensational run at the finish to register a clear-cut victory from Scottish Union and his stablemate Pasch. The going was good, despite heavy rain. The Royal Party received an enthusiastic reception as they arrived at the course. DERBY STAKES, a sweepstakes with £3000 added; second 10 per cent, and third 5 per cent, of the whole stakes; for three-year-old colts and fillies; li miles and 5 yards. Hon. P. R. L. Leon Volterra and trained by Fred Darling at Beckhampton, Wiltshire. His Majesty's representative Licence led till the foot of the hill, where Halcyon Gift dashed to the front, with Pasch lying a handy fourth. At the top bend Halcyon Gift was two lengths clear from Chatsworth, Pasch, and Scottish Union. The leader had extended his advantage to four lengths at the three-quarter mile, but it was reduced to two lengths at, Tattenham Corner, where Cave Man and Mirza II were coming up rapidly. . Scottish Union led into the straight, with Pasch in pursuit, and he looked a "certainty" until Bois Roussel came with an overwhelming run to win going away.
