MacFarlane (Labour) .. 18,698 Dr. John Guthrie, Citizens' Association) 17,418 The former Mayor, Mr. J. W. Beanland (Citizens) did not seek re-elec-tion. Labour' doubled the number of its representatives on the Christchurch City Council and now holds a ten to 'six majority, wfcich will further be strengthened by'the vote of the newly, elected Labour Mayor, Mr. MacFarlane. The representation of the Citizens' Association was reduced from eleven seats, which gave it 'a big majorky on the last council, to six, and four sitting members lost their seats. - On the Harbour Board the four city- seats went to Labour. • On the Hospital Board.Labour captured six of the nina seats. C. T. Smith, in the Blenheim Mayor* alty contest, beat a prominent member of the Labour Party, C. R. Garsidtt by 300 votes. The third candidate, Mr. McMurtry, was another 500 votes behind.
