ACTION BY MINISTER AND ENGINEERS
Immediately he received news of the disaster, the Minister of Public Works (the Hon. R. Semple) conferred with Mr. J. Woods (Engineer-in-Chief and Under-Secretary) of the Public Works Department. The Inspecting Engineer of the Public Works Department left Wellington today for the scene of the disaster. It appears that the disaster overtook the camp between 2 and 3 o'clock this morning. The camp that was wiped out was formerly the main camp, in the Kopuawhara Valley, but recently has been used by single men only. It was located at a place called Kaiangapipi. The Kopuawhara stream is for part of its journey knov/n as the Waiou. It flows into the sea near the Mahia Peninsula. . The waters which swept the camp rose to a height ot approximately six feet above the highest known flood level.
