THEIR SIXTH BABY

HIPPOPOTAMI AT ZOO

(By Telegraph.—Press Association.)

AUCKLAND, February 10,

Something of a world's record in the breeding of hippopotami in captivity has been achieved during the past ten years by the Auckland Zoo, where the sixth baby of Chucka and Bella was born today. Preparations for the event were made some days ago, precaution being taken to separate the father and mother, as the first baby was crushed and killed when the weighty father rolled on top of it. Two of the former offspring were successfully reared and the authorities hope the new arrival will thrive, as it should be worth about £500 when it grows older. No attempt will be made by the keepers to enter the pit for a few days, so that it will be impossible to determine the sex of the young hippo. Its destiny will rest on this, as female hippopotami are much in demand in Australia. The two hippos previously reared are now in the Perth and Adelaide zoos.
