On Saturday a deep cyclone was centred near | Norfolk Island and moving southwards at a I moderate speed. During the night its speed increased and as the centre passed Auckland it deepened considerably. Thereafter, still moving 'at an abnormally rapid rate, it travelled in a south-easterly direction and this morning Iliad passed Chatham Island. Stormy conditions I prevailed over tlvo North. Island during Saturday night and yesterday, gales blowing round tho centro of the cyclone. The southerly gales appear to have been most severe In tho Jlanawatu and tlio Wairarapa, much damage being done. IScports are missing from most of tho North Island, but floods havo probably been very widespread. Some very heavy rains are repcriod. : This morning conditions had improved very greatly.
