After a Jong period of indifferent health which occasioned his retirement from politics as a member for Awarua -in August, the death occurred this morning of Mr. P. A. de la Perrelle, aged 62.

Mr. Perrelle entered politics in 1921 and again in 1928, when he was appointed a member of the late Sir Joseph Ward's Cabinet, holding the portfolios of Internal Affairs and Tourists. A.t the end of 1931 he voluntarily relinquished Ministerial rank to

permit of the. Coalition Government being formed.. Mr. Perrelle played a prominent part in the public life of Southland. He had been a country newspaper proprietor since the age of 21, when he purchased the "Lake County Press." In 1912 he purchased the "Winton Record."

For some years Mr. Perrelle was a member of the Hospital Board and for many years a member of the Education Board, of which he was chairman. He was keenly interested in racing and trotting, and as Minister of Internal Affairs inspected various courses in New Zealand with a view to improving conditions.

Mr. Perrelle was twice married and is survived by a widow and three sons.

'Mr. H. J. Mulholland, one of the best-known bbwlers of Lower Hutt, died yesterday at his late residence, 135 Knight's Road. ■•...,- Mr. Mulholland was born at Win ton fifty-seven years ago, his father being sergeant of police at St. Clair. Thirty-seven years ago he joined the Royal New Zealand Artillery and during the war he was in charge of German prisoners of war in the Auckland district. He was afterwards transferred to Wellington, retiring on superannuation in 1931, with the rank of lieutenant, since when he has lived quietly at his home at Lower Hutt, where he has made, many friends. ■■-' Mr. Mulholland "-was a member of the Druids' Lodge,,; and was an enthusiastic bowler, being a past president and, at the time of his death, secretary of the Woburn Bowling Club. He was an ex-member of the Island Bay and Lower Hutt Bowling Clubs. The funeral took place at Karori this morning, the pall-bearers being members of the Woburn Bowling Club. Captain o Clifton represented the Defence Department. There was a large attendance. Among the large number of beautiful wreaths were tokens from the start of the General Officer Commanding, the General Headquarters staff, the Woburn Bowling Club, and the Hon. W. Nash, M.P. The Rev. Father L. Daly conducted Requiem Mass, and the Rev. Father Callaghan officiated at the service at the cemetery.

Mr. Mulholland is survived, by his widow and only daughter, Mrs. Bernard V. Hegarty.

News of the death in London at the age of 82 years of Mr. H. C. Benson was contained "in a cable message received recently by Mr. Warwick Gregory, local. director of the C. and D. Line, Ltd. Mr. Benson was one of the pioneers of steam services between Australia and New Zealand and England, and was for many years a partner in the once well-known firm of Tyser and Company, Ltd. When . the interests of that and other companies were merged into the present Commonwealth and Dominion Line, Ltd., Mr. Benson became a director of the latter shipping line. Mr. Benson was also a director of Simonius Vischer and Co., Ltd., the well-known Continental firm of wool-buyers. He leaves a son, who is connected with the firm in Australia.
