FRENCH GRAND PRIX

CRUDITES SURPRISE WIN

There were twenty-two runners in this, year's Grand Prix de Paris, decided at Longchamp on June 30 last, and, as recorded by the brief cable message of the, race, Baron Edouard de Rothschild's filly Crudite won by a short head from Mr. Arthur Sainsbury's recently-acquired colt William of Valence. The third horse, a length and a half away, was the Princesse de Faucigny Lucinge's colt Louqsor, who just previously had won the Prix Hocquart, 1& miles, usually regarded as a good line for the Grand Prix.

_ Crudite, who ran unplaced in the French Oaks three weeks earlier, is a; bay filly by La Farina out of Brantomes dam Vitamine. The success will compensate her owner, to some exent, for the Ascot eclipse of Brantome. ■ -..-■

: The three • runners of Baron Edouard carried the colours of the trainer, Lucien Robert, owing to a recent bereavement in the Rothschild family. '

«, n wm POO- 1 on the totalisator the stable, companions were bracketed, which accounts for the' fact'that Crudite returned much less than might have been anticipated. from her form. Her stable companion Peniche, who had won the. Oaks, was a popular fancy and induced-the betting on the bracket. On the place pool,, in which ail runners are named separately Crudite paid more than twice: as much as she did straight out. William of Valence s place price was even larger Crudite gave the Baron his first success in the Grand Prix. He has won practically every race of importance in .b ranee, and would no doubt have ca'--ried off last year's Longchamp affair had Brantome been fit to run "tvt X aL by c. narrowest margin that Mr. Arthur Sainsbury's sporting venture was frustrated. A fortnight previously he had bought William of Valence, from M. Leon Volterra, and engaged Steve Donoghue to ride the colt m the Grand Prix. William of Valence now goes into Atty Persse's Stockbridge stable to be trained, and wiU no doubt be entered for a number of the big autumn handicaps in England. _Tne third horse, Louqsor, carried the Rodosto colours, and was ridden by R. Brethes, who was associated with Rodosto's success in the Newmarket Two Thousand Guineas. M. E. de St. Alary's Samos was three-quarters of a length away fourth, M. Pierre Wertheimer's Mesa, winner of this year's One Thousand Guineas and third in the Oaks in England, was fifth. t Charlie Smirke, riding Prince Aly Khan's Prawn Curry, winner of the Belgian Derby, took the les.d at the start, followed by Card'on, Islay II and Herbrule. .Smirke continued to lead until the straight was reached when his mount dropped back beaten. Cardon then came on from Alcindor 111, with Mesa, William of Valence, and Cardon then came on from Alcindor 111, his mount perfectly placed, took the lead a little more than a furlong out, but though the colt ran with the utmost gameness, he failed by inches to hold off the challenge of Crudite.
