CRUDITES SURPRISE WIN

There were twenty-two runners in this, year's Grand Prix de Paris, decided at Longchamp on June 30 last, and, as recorded by the brief cable message of the,race, Baron Edouard de Rothschild's filly Crudite won by a short head from Mr. Arthur Sainsbury's recently-acquired colt William of Valence. The third horse, a length and a half away, was the Princesse de Faucigny Lucinge's colt Louqsor, who just previously had won the Prix Hocquart, 1& miles, usually regarded as a good line for the Grand Prix.

_ Crudite, who ran unplaced in the French Oaks three weeks earlier, is a; bay filly by La Farina out of Brantomes dam Vitamine. The success will compensate her owner, to some exent, for the Ascot eclipse of Brantome. ■ -..-■

Pierre Wertheimer's Mesa, winner of this year's One Thousand Guineas and third in the Oaks in England, was fifth. t Charlie Smirke, riding Prince Aly Khan's Prawn Curry, winner of the Belgian Derby, took the les.d at the start, followed by Card'on, Islay II and Herbrule. .Smirke continued to lead until the straight was reached when his mount dropped back beaten.
