R. PERRYMAN IN FORM
When he was back in the Dominion on a business holiday last summer, Sir Thomas Wilford, formerly New Zealand's High Commissioner in London, mentioned in an interview that he considered R. Perryman was at present the best jockey in England, though he did not receive quite the same opportunities as some of the other riders. It is therefore of interest to note that at the York Meeting on May 22 last Perryman had a most successful day, winning four of the six races, including the first three, and filling third place in "the other event in which he had a mount.
Perryman started off riding by easily winning the Ainsty Selling Plate on Tamarix, a French-bred son of Colorado. In the next race, the Micklegate Plate, he narrowly won on Valkyrie; and in the third race, the Knavesmore Maiden Plate, for two-year-olds, he landed the French Kiss colt a welljudged winner with a sharp effort over the final half-furlong. He did not have a-ridedn the-Yorkshire Cup, won by tlie Aga Khan's Felicitation; but he gained third place with Spinalot in the two-year-old Scarbrough Sweepstakes, in which the Bossover colt was a big favourite and always out clear in front, and he then- brought home the winner of the final'event, the Hambleton Maiden Plate, when •he drove Cyrus through .the field from the distance. The only favourite, he was on was the French Kiss colt, his other mounts being at useful prices, with Spinalot a .rank outsider. /:
